Printworks London ‘reawakens’ with major creative commission by United Visual Artists for AW21 season of major events.
Broadwick Live today, 16th September, has announced a major new creative commission by United Visual Artists to mark the reopening of its landmark London venue, Printworks.
The commission will be experienced as series of light interventions across the three main spaces of Printworks, welcoming guests back to the 6,000 capacity venue’s 12 acres of interlinked warehouses.
The concept articulates the idea of Printworks as a dormant building reawakening following the long-awaited reopening of music venues. It will provide Printworks and visiting performers a coherent visual language to the season’s events through lighting and video design, but with flexibility to accommodate the bold, diverse programme for which Printworks is known.
It will be the distinctive visual backdrop to 60 parties, and thousands of photos, between now and the end of the year, with major events featuring artists such as The Chemical Brothers, Amelie Lens, Dixon, Jon Hopkins, Tale of Us and Joseph Capriati.
In addition, UVA will orchestrate a number of one-off live specials which will be announced separately.
In redesigning the lighting and visual production for Printworks, UVA has continued this creative approach and draws on the venue’s striking architecture as well as its former use as a printing factory, connecting its history to today’s technological information streams. It continues UVA’s exploration of information technologies to articulate expressive and organic behaviours that suggest intelligent, living spaces. Printworks, located in Canada Water, housed the huge printing presses once used for papers including the Evening Standard.
UVA is known for its installation artworks and a long track record of collaborations with musicians and live performers including the creative direction for contemporary ballet and dance stage sets, and working with musicians such as Massive Attack and James Blake. The practice has enjoyed a lifetime of traversing high culture and sub culture, realising projects everywhere from the Paris Opéra Ballet to Coachella and Burberry’s fashion runway show. They have been commissioned by institutions including Barbican, Manchester International Festival and the V&A.
